Bull Rock Lighthouse

About

The Bull Rock Lighthouse, is an active navigational aid located 4 km off Dursey Island, Ireland. Although requested, Calf Rock was chosen and an iron structure was erected and lit in 1866. In 1881 a violent storm broke the structure off just above the strengthened area (from 1870) so a temporary light was stationed on Dursey Island. By 1889 a lighthouse was approved and built on Bull Rock. Bull rock is unique in that a hole traverses all the way through the islet. Irish mythology claims the rock as "Tech Duinn", the "house of the dark one" or the "house of Donn", where the souls of the dead gather. The hole became known as the "Entrance of the Underworld". The rock is uninhabited and can not be directly visited, but only by boat tours around the rock.
