Gijang Japanese Castle
Gijang, South Korea · built 1593
Waeseong in Jukseong-ri, Gijang (Gijang Jukseong-ri Waseong) is a Japanese-style castle located in Gijang-gun, Busan, South Korea. It is a stone fortress built by the Japanese general Kuroda Nagamasa while defending the area during the Imjin War around June 1593. This coastal fortress, built on a hill behind the village of Jukseong-ri, covers an area of approximately 36,945 square metres (397, 670 sq ft), with a perimeter of about 300 metres (980 ft) and a height of 4 metres (13 ft). It was placed at a strategically important coastal node connecting Seosaengpo Waeseong in Ulsan, Hakseong, and Busanjinjiseong. Stones used to construct the fortress were repurposed from the earlier Korean Dumopojinseong fortification, the remnants of which can still be found in surrounding villages. Today, while much of the surrounding terrain is used as agricultural farmland, the stone walls remain relatively well preserved.
