World's Only Theater HQ Celebrates 20 Years in Taiwan, Becoming Cultural Diplomacy Hub

International theatre organisations play a pivotal role in the global theatre and performing‑arts community, and the world’s sole theatre headquarters has been based in Taiwan for twenty years since its relocation. With strong support and funding from the Ministry of Culture, the OISTAT International Theatre Organization celebrated the twentieth anniversary of its move to Taiwan with a grand ceremony. The event not only summarized two decades of dedicated work but also symbolised Taiwan’s transformation from a mere participant to an indispensable hub in the international performing‑arts arena, showcasing the country’s vibrant cultural energy and grassroots dynamism.

The relocation of OISTAT’s global executive secretariat to Taiwan marked a major breakthrough in Taiwan’s cultural diplomacy history. During the celebration, CEO Wei Wanrong likened the well‑known semiconductor industry to orogeny, while cultural diplomacy is akin to river engineering. The semiconductor sector has cemented Taiwan’s strategic position in physical technology and the economy, whereas cultural diplomacy and the presence of international organisations create a continuous flow of soft power and global visibility, linking Taiwan’s cultural pulse to the world’s rhythm.

OISTAT has long worked to promote exchange among theatre practitioners worldwide, foster technical innovation, advance theatre architecture, and provide education and training. Securing the headquarters of this globally representative organisation in Taiwan required not only long‑term policy and financial commitment from the government but also the efforts and professional reputation of countless outstanding Taiwanese theatre professionals. Over the past twenty years, the secretariat has operated steadily in Taiwan, unimpeded by regional political interference. Instead, Taiwan’s excellent information infrastructure, democratic and open social environment, and strong administrative execution have enabled the organisation to drive numerous important cross‑national cooperation projects among its member countries.

For Taiwan’s performing‑arts ecosystem, hosting the headquarters locally has delivered unparalleled tangible benefits. Domestic theatre designers, technicians, directors, and administrative teams now have immediate access to the latest international theatre trends, the use of environmentally sustainable materials, innovations in lighting and stage technology, and the newest international standards for theatre safety and labour rights. This proximity has significantly broadened the international perspective of Taiwanese theatre professionals and allowed the country’s younger generation to stand directly on the shoulders of the global stage, participating in the construction of worldwide theatre discourse rather than merely receiving external information.
