Tainan's Folk Arts Master Xiao Zaijin Passes Away, Honored with Presidential Commendation Order.

Lian Xi Zhen, a renowned lantern artist from Hsinchu, has passed away. Lian Xi Zhen's contributions to the city's cultural heritage have been recognized by the Ministry of Culture.

Lantern-making is an essential traditional craft in Hsinchu, with a rich history and widespread popularity. However, this beautiful art form is facing the risk of disappearing. In April of this year, I had the opportunity to visit the lantern-making exhibition in Hsinchu, where I saw many exquisite lantern pieces. Among them, Lian Xi Zhen's works stood out for their exceptional quality, leaving me in awe.

Lian Xi Zhen's life is a legend in the field of lantern-making. His passion and dedication to this craft took it to new heights. Not only were his lanterns aesthetically pleasing, but they also held deep cultural significance. Lian Xi Zhen's works were not only cherished by the local community but also attracted visitors from elsewhere, making his lantern art a symbol of Hsinchu's culture and a treasure of Taiwan's cultural heritage.

Lian Xi Zhen's achievements extend beyond his lantern-making skills. He also played a crucial role in passing down this craft to the next generation through teaching and mentorship. His son, Lian Wei Xing, has mentioned that he was introduced to the craft by his father at a young age and learned the essence of lantern-making under Lian Xi Zhen's guidance.

Lian Xi Zhen's passing has left us with a sense of regret, but it has also allowed us to appreciate his accomplishments and impact. He not only preserved this traditional craft but also passed on the cultural heritage to future generations. His role in the development of lantern-making has been instrumental in ensuring its continuation and growth.

Today, Li Jing Hui, Deputy Minister of Culture, attended Lian Xi Zhen's funeral and, on behalf of the President, conferred upon him the highest honor, the Presidential Certificate of Commendation. Lian Xi Zhen's son, Lian Wei Xing, accepted the award. This recognition is a testament to Lian Xi Zhen's work and contributions, and it will further solidify his legacy and impact.

Lian Xi Zhen's lantern-making craft has not only become a symbol of Hsinchu's culture but also a treasured cultural heritage of Taiwan. His contributions to the development of lantern-making will be remembered forever.
