This city is a bedroom community of Tokyo. It is also a bedroom community of Tsukuba Science City. Ushiku has a growing population, which is rare in Japan where the birthrate is declining and the population is ageing.

Open 24 hours (public park). (updated Jul 2021) 3 Ushiku Daibutsu (牛久大仏). At 120m tall, it is the tallest Buddha statue in the world. There is a viewpoint at 85 meters that looks out through the statue's chest - don't worry, this modern structure completed in 1993 has an elevator inside.
