Telangana travel guide

Understand

Telangana (Telugu: TAY-luhng-gah-nnuh, Urdu: TIH-luhng-gah-nuh) sits at the heart of the Deccan, shaped by rugged hills, rocky landscapes, and ancient boulders scattered across its terrain.

Name According to one popular theory, the name "Telangana" is derived from the name of a region called Tṛliṇgadeśa (त्रिलिङ्गदेश) in Sanskrit, meaning the "land of three lingams", and the region is said to be home to 3 prominent Shaivite shrines: Kaleshwaram (in present-day Telangana), Srisailam and Daksharamam (both in present-day Andhra Pradesh). One of the earliest use of the name is in the name of Malik Maqbul Tilangani in the 14th century, who was the commander of the Warangal Fort, and later vizier of Delhi Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq. During the Nizam rule of Hyderabad, the name "Telangana" referred to the Telugu-speaking region of his dominion, just like its Marathi-speaking region was called Marathwada.

History

Telangana's history is marked by a succession of dynasties and cultural influences. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Kakatiya dynasty, with its capital at Warangal, played a pivotal role in shaping the region's identity. Following the Kakatiyas, the area came under the rule of the Bahmani Sultanate and later the Qutb Shahi dynasty, which established Golconda as a prominent centre of culture and commerce. In the 18th century, the Nizams of Hyderabad rose to power, maintaining autonomy during British colonial rule through a subsidiary alliance. After India's independence in 1947, this region's statehood status has seen multiple changes. At first, the Hyderabad State ruled by the Nizams was annexed into India in 1948. Then, the state was split into three regions based on language in 1956. The Telugu-speaking region became part of Andhra Pradesh, and Hyderabad became the capital of the state. On 2 June 2014, following a popular movement for separation, Telangana was split from Andhra Pradesh with its capital. The Telangana Day is celebrated annually on 2 June
