Understand

Tangshan is a large administrative area known as a prefecture, with a population of 2,550,000 (2020). Within this prefecture are the urban areas of Tangshan proper and several other cities, including Zunhua, which is home to the Eastern Qing Tombs, as well as Luanzhou and Qian'an.

History Tangshan was named after Dacheng Mountain (formerly known as Tangshan) located in the central urban area. During the Shang Dynasty, it belonged to the Guzhu and Shanrong states. In the Warring States period, it was part of the Yan territory, and in the Han Dynasty, it belonged to Youzhou. During the Tang Dynasty, it was under Pingzhou and Jizhou; under the Liao and Jin dynasties, it belonged to Nanjing Dao, Zhongdu Road, and Beijing Road. In the Yuan Dynasty, it was administered under Zhongshu Province, Dadu Road, and Yongping Road. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it belonged to Shuntian Prefecture, Yongping Prefecture, and Zunhua Subprefecture. In 1877 (the third year of the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty), Qiaotun Town was established and later renamed Tangshan Town. After the founding of the Republic of China in 1912, the administrative divisions largely followed those of the Qing period. In 1929, Zhili Province was renamed Hebei Province. On January 28, 1939, the puppet East Hebei Anti-Communist Autonomous Government officially designated Tangshan as a city due to its important economic and political position. It was first called the “Tangshan Municipal Government,” and later renamed the “Tangshan Municipal Office.” After Japan’s surrender in 1945, the Nationalist government in Beiping (Beijing) sent officials to take over the former puppet administration and set up an inspector’s office. In 1976, Tangshan was struck by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake. In minutes, 85 percent of its buildings collapsed or were rendered unusable, all services failed, and most of the highway and railway bridges collapsed or were seriously damaged. The official death toll was 242,469 (although historians put the toll as high as 300,000), making it the deadliest earthquake in recorded world history.

Climate

Tangshan is located in North China, between 117° and 119° east longitude and 38° and 40° north latitude. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the Bohai Sea to the east, it lies near the Yanshan Mountains in the west, with terrain generally higher in the west and lower in the east. As a typical temperate continental monsoon climate region, it has distinct seasons, abundant sunlight, and concentrated rainfall, reflecting the characteristic climate of northern China.

Getting there

By plane 1 Tangshan Sannühe Airport (IATA: TVS, 唐山三女河机场), Fengrun District (唐山丰润区) (about 20 km northeast of the city centre). It is a joint military–civilian airport, providing regular domestic flights to major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Chongqing, Xian, Harbin, Dalian, Haikou, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Changsha. By train 2 Tangshan Railway Station (唐山站), 160 Zhanqian Road South, Lubei District (路北区站前南路160号). A major transport hub integrating rail, bus and taxi services in Tangshan. High-speed rail service between Beijing Railway Station and Tangshan Railway Station takes 60 to 100 minutes. Tangshan Station features a dedicated taxi waiting area. Passengers may proceed directly from the basement level via the sunken plaza to queue at the taxi rank. Tangshan Bus Route 2, operates between Tangshan Station and Qixin Interchange. First and last departures from Tangshan Station are at 05:20 and 21:30 respectively. Tangshan Bus Route 4 operates between Tangshan Station and Yanhelou. First and last departures from Tangshan Station are at 05:20 and 21:00 respectively. Tangshan Bus Route 6 operates between Dingjiatun Depot and Shuizhuang West Exit. First and last departures from Dingjiatun Depot are at 05:40 and 20:00 respectively. The bus fare is ¥1 per person (¥2 during the air-conditioning period).

Getting around

The earthquake memorial and park in the centre of town on Xinhua Road is an important focal point. Tangshan is among the largest Chinese cities without a subway system.

By taxi Taxis start at ¥10 for the first 2 km, then charge ¥2.5 per additional kilometer, with a waiting fee of ¥2 for every 5 minutes.

The Tangshan Museum is a comprehensive museum that highlights both the city’s ancient history and its industrial development. The museum houses more than 17,000 cultural relics, including artifacts from the Neolithic Dacianshan site and exhibits tracing Tangshan’s evolution from early settlements to a modern industrial hub. Among its most remarkable collections are the Naoma Elephant ivory fossils, unearthed in 1958 from the Zhua Village site in Qian’an and dating back about 42,000 years. These large and well-preserved fossils provide valuable scientific and historical insight into the prehistoric environment of the region. One of the museum’s most treasured items is a perforated red copper ornament excavated from the Dacianshan ruins, considered one of the earliest known metal artifacts in China. The museum also showcases Tangshan’s distinctive cultural heritage, featuring local forms of folk art such as shadow puppetry, Pingju opera, and Leting drum storytelling, known collectively as the “Three Blossoms of Eastern Hebei.” Free. Festivals Nanhu Lantern Festival (南湖灯会). 15:00-22:00. Eat

Seafood is a big part of Tangshan cuisine, featuring an abundance of crabs, shrimp, and clams freshly caught from the Bohai Sea, during the months when a fishing ban is not in effect. To experience a wide variety of local seafood, visiting one of the city's seafood buffets is recommended.

Three Fishermen (渤海三个鱼夫蒸汽海鲜自助). This restaurant offers a unique dining experience where patrons can take a bucket to an aquatic market in the center of the establishment. Here, you can fill your bucket with fresh crabs, shellfish, and other seafood. Once you've made your selection, place it in a large pan in the middle of your table for steaming. Local specialties Chess Piece Biscuits (棋子烧饼). Small, round pastries shaped like chess pieces, filled with meat, sugar, or mixed fillings. Golden, crispy, and slightly sweet, they are one of Tangshan’s signature snacks. Lecha (饹馇). A mung-bean pancake dish that can be fried, sautéed, or boiled. It has a soft inside and a crispy edge, with both savory and sour-sweet versions popular among locals. Honey Crisp Candy (蜂蜜麻糖). A traditional Tangshan sweet with a 400-year history, made from honey, sesame, and osmanthus. Crispy, aromatic, and part of the city’s intangible cultural heritage. Chestnut Stewed Pork (迁西板栗炖肉). Traditional liquors Guzhu Guo Liquor (孤竹国酒). A handcrafted spirit with a history dating back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It is made using traditional distillation techniques and is known for its rich and mellow flavor. Yutian Old Liquor (玉田老酒). With a long brewing history, this liquor was once served as an imperial tribute. Represented by the “Fengnian” brand, it is famous for its distinctive and unique taste. Produced by Hongyuan Distillery in Yutian County, this liquor has been recognized as a “China Time-honored Brand” and is listed as a Hebei Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage. Made from sorghum and brewed using the traditional “Old Five Steaming” technique, it is known for its clear and bright appearance, rich cellar aroma, and smooth, mellow, slightly sweet flavor. Specialty drinks Xiangwang A Pear Juice (向旺安梨汁). A specialty from Qianxi, Tangshan, this juice is made from locally grown A pears (also called sour pears), which have fine-textured flesh and a balanced sweet-and-sour flavor. The juice is refreshing and thirst-quenching, a popular summer beverage, and is widely available in local restaurants.
