About Suyeong District
Suyeong (수영구, Suyeong-gu) is a vibrant coastal district in the east of Busan. While its famous neighbor Haeundae is known for upscale hotels, Suyeong is arguably Busan's most popular local playground, centered around the iconic Gwangalli Beach (광안리 해수욕장). It offers a more energetic, youthful, and local alternative, attracting large crowds in the summer for the beach and on weekends for parties.
The district's heart is the long, crescent-shaped Gwangalli Beach, renowned for its fine sand and a bustling promenade packed day-and-night with trendy cafes, endless restaurants, and lively pubs. The undisputed centerpiece is the magnificent Gwangan Bridge (광안대교), which spans the entire bay. At night, the bridge puts on a spectacular LED light show, creating a breathtaking, glittering backdrop that has become a symbol of modern Busan.
Suyeong's appeal extends well beyond the main beach. To the east lies Millak-dong (민락동), home to massive raw fish centers (hoe-center) and the unique Millak Waterside Park (민락수변공원). This park is a beloved local spot where people buy fresh seafood from the market and enjoy it picnic-style (chimaek and hoe) right by the water's edge. To the west, the Namcheon-dong (남천동) neighborhood is locally famous for its "Bread Street" (빵천동), a collection of popular artisan bakeries.

Understand
Suyeong-gu (수영구) is a central, coastal district of Busan. It is most famous for its iconic Gwangalli Beach (광안리 해수욕장), which offers breathtaking nighttime views of the Gwangan Bridge (광안대교), one of Busan's most famous landmarks. Once a historical fishing village (the name 'Suyeong' itself means 'Naval Base'), the district is now a vibrant, modern area packed with countless cafes, restaurants, and bars, making it especially popular with a younger crowd. Beyond the main beach, the Millak-dong (민락동) area draws large crowds to its massive raw fish (hoe) centers and the popular Millak Waterside Park (민락수변공원), a unique open space where people buy fresh seafood and eat it right by the water's edge. Suyeong is a district article and part of the main Busan article. It is bordered by Haeundae to the east (across the Suyeong River), Yeonje-gu to the north, and Nam-gu to the west.
Orientation Suyeong-gu's main attractions are densely clustered along its coastline.
Gwangalli (광안리) is the district's heart, centered on the long, crescent-shaped Gwangalli Beach and its promenade. This area is the main hub for restaurants, nightlife, and beach-view cafes. Millak-dong (민락동), at the northeast end of the beach, is home to the Millak Raw Fish Town and the Millak Waterside Park (민락수변공원). Namcheon-dong (남천동), to the southwest, is a more residential area famous for its "Bread Street" (빵천동), which features a high concentration of popular local bakeries. Inland, Suyeong-dong (수영동) is the historical and administrative center. It contains the Suyeong Historical Park (수영사적공원) and the busy Suyeong Rotary, a major transportation hub connecting Metro Lines 2 and 3 at Suyeong Station.

Getting there
Suyeong is well-connected by Busan's public transportation system, making it easy to get to and from other parts of the city. The primary gateway to the district is Gwangalli Beach, which is easily accessible via the subway or bus.
By subway The closest metro station to Gwangalli Beach is Gwangan Station (subway line number 2, exits 3 or 5). From either exit, it's a straightforward 5-minute walk to the beach. You can also get off at Millak Station (subway line number 2, exit 1) to explore the eastern end of the beach and the Millak Raw Fish Market area.

By bus Busan has an extensive bus network. Buses are a great way to get to Suyeong from other major areas, often with fewer transfers.
From Busan Station or Nampo-dong, take city buses No. 41, 42, 139, 140, 239, or 240 and get off at the Gwangalli Beach bus stop. The bus ride typically takes about 25-30 minutes. From Haeundae, take bus No. 39, 40, or 139 and get off at Gwangalli Beach. The journey is quick, usually around 10-15 minutes. For night buses, the N5 (심야버스) operates between Busan Station and Haeundae, passing through Gwangalli.
By taxi Taxis are readily available throughout Busan, both on the street and through ride-hailing apps. They are a convenient option, especially for travelers with luggage or those traveling in a group.
Kakao T (카카오 T): This is the most popular and widely-used ride-hailing app in South Korea. The app is available in English and is highly recommended for its ease of use. Simply enter your destination, and a nearby taxi will be dispatched to your location. You can pay with a registered credit card, which is often more convenient than paying with cash. Uber: While Uber is available in Busan, it is not as common as Kakao T and often operates in partnership with local taxi companies (UT). It can be a good option for international travelers who prefer to use a familiar app. It's a good idea to have your destination address wr
Getting around
Suyeong-gu's main tourist areas are very compact and best explored on foot. For longer distances, such as heading inland to Suyeong Station or along the Suyeonggang River, bicycles and local buses are excellent options.
On foot Walking is the best and most popular way to experience Suyeong. The entire Gwangalli Beach promenade is a wide, flat, and pleasant walk (about 1.5 km end-to-end). From the main beach, you can easily continue walking east to the Millak Raw Fish Market and the popular Millak Waterside Park (민락수변공원). The lively backstreets behind the beach, filled with cafes, prop shops, and restaurants, are also designed for pedestrians. At the western end of the beach, the Namcheon-dong neighborhood and its famous "Bread Street" (빵천동) are also best explored by walking.
By bicycle Suyeong is a fantastic district for cycling, especially along its scenic waterways.
Suyeonggang River (수영강): This is the premier cycling route. A well-maintained, dedicated bicycle path runs alongside the river, offering a peaceful and scenic ride away from car traffic. You can ride north towards APEC Naru Park (in Haeundae) and connect to other city bike paths. Gwangalli Promenade: While you can bike along the beach promenade, be extremely cautious. It is often very crowded with pedestrians, especially in the evenings and on weekends. This path is better for a very slow, casual cruise than for serious cycling. Bike Rentals: You can find numerous private bicycle rental shops along the Gwangalli Beach road (Gwanganhaebyeon-ro), offering hourly rentals. Public bike rental stations are also available.
By public transport For destinations within Suyeong that are too far to walk (like from Gwangalli Beach to the Suyeong Rotary area), the local bus network is very efficient. Buses frequently run along the main roads. Busan Metro Line 2 (Green Line) runs parallel to the beach but is located several blocks inland, with stations at Geumnyeonsan, Gwangan, and Millak. 1 Gwangalli Beach. Best experienced at night when the impressive Gwangan Grand Bridge is illuminated. The area is similar to Haeundae but smaller and less upscale. There are plenty of local restaurants, bars and shops in the area. In summer the crowds are slightly less than in Haeundae Beach. This is also the premier location for new year's ever firework/drone shows. (updated Jan 2024) 2 Gwangan Grand Bridge (광안대교). Driving (or taking the bus) across Gwangan Bridge is a great way to see the view, especially at nighttime. Viewed from the town it has an impressive light display at night. It featured in the Marvel movie 'Black Panther'. (updated Jan 2024) 3 Millak subyeon park (민락수변공원), 361, Gwanganhaebyeon-ro.
