Silchar (Bengali: শিলচর Shilchor, Sylheti: ꠡꠤꠟꠌꠞ Silchor) is the largest city of the Barak Valley region of Assam, India.

Getting there

By train 3 Silchar NFR (Bhasha Shahid Station, IR code: SCL). The railway station with memories of the Bengali language movement in Assam. In 1961, the government of Assam issued a circular making Assamese mandatory, prompting protests from Bengalis in the Barak Valley. On 19 May 1961, the Assam Police opened fire on unarmed protesters at Silchar station, resulting in 11 deaths. The state government later withdrew the circular, and Bengali became an official language in the Barak Valley region. Every year, 19 May is celebrated as Bhasha Shahid Dibas to commemorate the incident. (updated Jun 2026)
