It is the base point for visiting Kumano-Sanzan, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site (Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range).

Getting there
From Nagoya, the Nanki provides direct access to Shingu in about 3.5 hours. From Osaka, the Kuroshio departs from Shin-Osaka Station and reaches Shingu in about 4.5 hours. 1 hour 40 minutes by express from the JR Shirahama Station. About 1 hour 10 minutes to Nanki Shirahama Airport from Haneda Airport.
