Scone is a town of 3400 people in the Upper Hunter Valley and is known as the horse capital of Australia.

Getting there

By car From Sydney, 387 km. From Newcastle, 153 km.

By train 1 Scone Station marks the terminus of the Hunter Line in the Intercity rail network with trains from Newcastle (which means you can use your Opal card), passing Maitland before branching towards and passing Greta, Branxton, Singleton and Muswellbrook. However, the number of trains at terminate at Scone is limited: on weekdays, the train leaves Newcastle Interchange at 3:18AM, 4:29PM and 5:59PM, and leaves at 3:55AM and 2:24PM on weekends. A timetable from TfNSW can be found here. Scone is on the Main North railway line between Sydney and Armidale/Moree, and NSW TrainLink services the town daily.

Go next

The Polblue Honeysuckle section of Barrington Tops National Park is around 45 minutes to the east. The road is unsealed east of Moonan Flat, though, so only visit this park if you have a 4WD. Muswellbrook is to the south.
