Nyandungu Eco-park is a restored wetland and forest area in Kigali, Rwanda. The park has ornamental ponds, eastern gallery forests, medicinal plant gardens, paved walk ways, restaurants, information centers and other recreational services.

Understand
Nyandungu Eco-park is Rwanda's first restored urban wetland transformed into an eco-park. It covers 121 hectares (300 acres), divided into approximately 70 ha of wetland and 50 ha of forest. The Rwanda Environment Management Authority undertook the restoration to demonstrate how urban wetlands could combat pollution and flood risks. Critical habitats were rehabilitated, including a native fig forest and the wetland, a network of walking and cycling paths was established. Among the special features are a medicinal herb garden and a “Pope’s Garden” where Pope John Paul II gave a sermon during his visit to Rwanda in 1990. In addition, there are gallery forests and five ornamental ponds named after Lake Muhazi, Lake Kivu, Lake Ruhondo and Lake Ihema in Rwanda.
Flora and fauna Nyandungu Eco-park is classified as an important bird area, home to 200 species of birds. Around 17,000 trees of 55 different native species were planted in the park. More than 62 native plant species are found there. Furthermore, the number of recorded bird species increased from over 100 to over 220 as a result of the restoration. Among the species found is the endangered southern crowned crane. In addition, the park is home to several species of fish, reptiles, and amphibians, such as the reed frog. Antelopes were first sighted in the park in 2023.

Getting there
It lies 12 km east of downtown Kigali, on National Route 4, north of Kigali Airport.
Do
There are 10 km of walking and cycling paths in the park. The park offers yoga classes in a variety of natural locations. Guided bird-watchingbtours are available.
Eat
Nyandungu Restaurant offers a range of local and international dishes, and caters to dietary restrictions and preferences upon request. There are also designated picnic spots.
