History Ancient Steps: The earliest known inhabitants on the land now known as Mustang Island were the Karankawa indigenous people. The Karankawa were a hunter-gatherer people, and they lived off the shellfish and mussels they caught in the Gulf. Too, the Karankawa were known as cannibals.

Getting there

The nearest town is Port Aransas, about six miles to the northeast. Corpus Christi is just over the Padre Island causeway about ten miles to the west.
