Mormugao is a region of South Goa on a peninsula at the mouth of the Zuari River.

Understand

Mormugao was founded by the Portuguese, who built several forts along the coast in the 17th century. The original natural harbor was extensively expanded in 1888 and has since become one of India's largest ports. In 1961, Goa became part of India. The port of Mormugao became a major export port for Indian iron ore.

Getting there

By plane The nearest airport is 1 Dabolim Airport, 4 km (2.5 mi) from Vasco da Gama, the nearest city.

By rail The nearest railway station is 2 Vasco da Gama railway station, 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) away.

By road It is well-connected by road via NH17A, with major cities such as Panaji and Margao. It is 30–32 km (19–20 mi) from Panaji, and 33 km (21 mi) from Margao. Taxis, private cars, and buses are available, with the journey offering scenic coastal views, particularly near the harbour road and Sancoale. Route National Highway 66, NH-66 (previously known as NH17) from Mumbai to Goa going past Panaji and Margao.

Getting around

The most convenient way to explore local beaches and attractions by renting a scooter or bike for flexibility, hiring private taxis for comfort, or using local auto-rickshaws for short trips. The area, anchored by Vasco da Gama and the port, is well-connected by road.

Mormugao region offers a mix of historic forts, serene beaches and maritime history. Top sights include the 17th-century Mormugao Fort, the scenic Japanese Garden, and the Naval Aviation Museum. Key beaches are Bogmalo, Hansa, and the quiet Baina Beach.
