About Manpo

Manpo travel guide

Understand

In 2019 a border crossing opened between Manpo and Ji'an, allowing Chinese tour groups to visit Manpo, with plans for other nationalities to visit as well. North Korea ceased all foreign tours into the country in early 2020, and is still closed as of January 2026 with the exception of Russian nationals. It is home to about 117,000 people (census, 2008)

Getting there

It is possible to enter Manpo as part of a guided day trip from Ji'an in the Jilin province of China.

See

Chagang province is the most restricted province in North Korea for tourists to travel to. Prior to the opening of Manpo, the only place tourists could enter was Huichon, and that was only to provide accommodation at the Huichon Hotel for tourists visiting the nearby Ryongmun Cavern or Mt Myohyang. As such, Manpo is the only city in the Chagang province tourists can take travel around as part of a guided tour.

Do

As part of a guided tour, tourists may visit the Manpo Pavilion, Junggang Revolutionary Museum, Junggang Farm, Junggang School, Manpo Wool Mill, Manpo Children's Traffic Park and Manpo City Kindergarten.

Eat

Tour groups are provided with lunch at Manpo Hotel, the main hotel for foreigners in Manpo. Patrons can expect North Korean cuisine such as cold noodles and kimchi.

Sleep

Although the Manpo Hotel exists as a lunch stop for tourists on day trips, it has not been confirmed if tourists are permitted to stay in Manpo overnight.

Go next

From Manpo it is possible for foreign tourists to travel to Pyongyang by train. Tourists on a guided day trip would return to Ji'an.
