About Mahabaleshwar
Mahabaleshwar is located in the Satara district and is a popular weekend gateway for the residence of Pune (120 km) and Mumbai (215 km). Located at a height of 1372 m above sea level, it is the largest hill station in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra state. There are several lookout points which offer spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys. There is an old Shiva temple in the forest, which is the source of five rivers, including the Krishna river which is the second longest river of peninsular India.

Understand
The altitude and the cool climate of Mahabaleshwar makes it a popular tourist destination. The majority of tourist flows happen during the monsoon and winter months. The unique landscape, featuring towering cliffs, thundering waterfalls, and meandering rivers, makes Mahabaleshwar a natural paradise. The main destinations are the "points", named after prominent British administrators who found these splendid locations with unbeatable views. The points are located at various edges of the plateau in different directions. Apart from some natural landscape, Mahabaleshwar is home to several ancient temples. Mahabaleshwar and the nearby Panchgani region are famous for strawberry cultivation and account for 85% of the country's production.

By train Satara CR (STR). Satara is the nearest rail station, located 68 km away (updated Jun 2025)
By bus 1 Mahabaleshwar Bus Station. Mahabaleshwar is easily accessible from Pune and Mumbai. You can take a tourist bus (Volvo) from Mumbai, departing from Dadar East, Sion or Vashi. The ride will take you 6 hours and will cost around ₹1500. An ordinary AC bus will cost ₹200. The Volvo bus from Pune is operated by private companies (Neeta and Konduskar), and they charge approx ₹400 each way. The Govt. Express bus from Swargate starting 5:45AM and every hour with a price of ₹120 per individual. Private cab tours to Mahabaleshwar from Pune and Mumbai are operated by Vasa Cabs. (updated Aug 2018)
By car It is a popular driving and biking destination for the residents of Pune (120 km) and Mumbai (215 km). From Mumbai, the trip takes about 5 to 6 hours if travelling via Panvel through Mahad and Poladpur. A better option is to take the Mumbai-Pune expressway and the highway onwards from Pune to Satara; this route is 40 km longer but only takes 5 hours, and has easier driving (the road is straighter). You have to get off this highway at a place called Sirur and then travel via Wai and Panchgani to Mahabaleshwar. On arriving by car, the Municipal council charges a fee of ₹50 per head and ₹50 per car, which is collected on entry points to the town and is valid for seven days. Be careful and count the tickets as the collecting agents have a tendency to give a few short tickets. UPI payment is accepted. The Panchgani Municipal council also charges an entrance of ₹50 per vehicle if you are just passing through on your way to Mahabaleshwar.
Getting around
'Own car: Tourist driving in Mahabaleshwar can continue the sightseeing in their own car. The roads are good and there are proper signage leading to the different spots. Conduct Tours: City tours in bus (37 seater semi-luxary bus) are arranged by the Govt. Tickets are booked one day in advance. Cost is around ₹80-85 per person. there are two tour, one is Pratapgad darshan in morning 9:15AM and Mahabaleshwar darshan in noon 2:15PM (4 hours covering 11 Points Arthur, Kate, Strawberry farm and finally ending with Sunset. The driver speaks only in Marathi with some Hindi. During off-season there is only one bus but during season three buses ply on this Darshan. Beware of monkeys.) Rental cars: Rental cars are the most common means of transport for exploring Mahabaleshwar. Hotels can arrange for the cars.

The different view points are a prime attraction of Mahabaleshwar. There are about 25 view points in and around Mahabaleshwar. Most of these points would give you the same view (of mountains/valley) from a slightly different angle. So it is advisable to visit a few of them. The following are a must:
View points 1 Arthur's Seat. One of the most popular spots. This is at the end of the road, that is a dead end. There is no parking available, and during peak season it may be impossible to get a spot on the sides of the road. You can park at Savitri point, just 300 m away, and walk to Arthur's seat point, with several other points along the way. Castle Rock point is also nearby. There are lot of eateries at the entrance. There is also a Sulabh toilet but don't expect cleanliness, lights and doors inside. There are no toilets available at other points on the way and you may be hours away from the next one. (updated Nov 2024) 2 Savitri Point. Just ahead (before) of the Arthur's Seat. After the renovation, it has good stairways that give beautiful views of the valley below. There is a small parking area. 3 Elphinston Point. On the way to Arthur's Seat. This point also provides beautiful views of the valleys. There is a big parking area at this point. 4 Babington Point. 5 Bombay Point (Sunset Point). 6 Elephant's head Point (Needle’s Point). 6:00 am - 6:00 pm. From the viewpoint an overhanging cliff in the shape of an elephant trunk is visible. Apart from the strange rock formation there are great views of the surrounding cliffs 7 Kate's Point. 6:00 am - 6:00 pm. Named after Kate, daughter of John Malcolm, Governor of Bombay (1 November 1827 – 1 December 1830). Located at an altitude of 1473 meters, Kate Point offers a birds-eye view of the Dhoom Lake and the meandering Krishna River ₹10. 8 Lodwick Point. Do
Boating. Visit lake Venna for a ride on paddle or rowing boat. You may ride boat on your own or, alternatively, you can hire one. It is a beautiful and scenic lake. The paddle boats are stopped during the monsoon season (June to September), so you have to do with the rowing boat. Rowing boat: self-rowing at ₹ 400 for half an hour, ₹ 800 for one hour for the boat that can take about 8 adults. If you need a rower to do the rowing for you, ₹200 for half an hour. Accepts only cash, no card or UPI payment.. (updated Oct 2024) Horse Riding. Horse rides are available in the Veena Lake region Tapola. About 50 km from Mahabaleshwar. Tourists can enjoy boating. There are many scenic view points and strawberry farms on the way. Trekking. There are many many trekking trails around the hills of Mahabaleshwar. Ask your hotel for the nearest trekking trail Watch Sunrise and Sunsets. Go to Wilson Point or Kate's Point to watch beautiful sunrises, and to Bombay Point or Elphinstone Point to see glowing sunsets.
Festival Maha Paryatan Utsav, Mahabaleshwar (or Great Tourism Festival, Mahabaleshwar), was held from 2 to 4 May 2025 at Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani. The festival was a blend of tradition and modern experience. The visitors were housed in a modern tent complex with all modern amenities. Visitors were kept busy with cultural parades and strawberry farm visits. The festival featured diverse cultural and tourism activities, including aero-sports like paragliding and paramotoring. Laser and drone shows were also part of the activities.
