About Liuzhou
Liuzhou is a prefecture-level city in north-central Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China. The prefecture's population was 4,146,000 as of the 2024 census, including 2,519,051 in the built-up area made of five urban districts. Its total area is 18,594 km2 (7,179 sq mi) and 3,559.4 km2 (1,374.3 sq mi) for the built-up area.
Liuzhou is located on the banks of the winding Liu River, approximately 255 km (158 mi) from Nanning, the regional capital. By road, it is about 167 km (104 mi) to Guilin, 167 km (104 mi) to Hechi, 237 km (147 mi) to Nanning, 373 km (232 mi) to Fangchenggang, 448 km (278 mi) to Beihai.
Swimming in the river is a tradition of the city. The river is normally green, but sometimes in summer, floods from the mountain areas upstream bring sediment which colors the water yellow. In early 2012, a cadmium spill upstream caused serious pollution worries.

Getting there
Liuzhou is a major rail hub and has good connections with most areas of China. The small airport offers flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou etc.

Domestic destinations (updated Jan 2020) The city-airport express bus departs from the airport to South Bus Station, with stops at Yufengshan and Lianhua Bus Station. The airport is also served by public bus route no. 21, which departs for the eastern end of Wu Yi Road. Bus route no. 21 operates from 07:10 to 18:15 and costs ¥2.

Getting around
Liuzhou has an extensive bus service and some of the cheapest taxis in China. The city centre is easily explored on foot, but some of the parks, etc are a bit further out.

Reportedly the largest military museum in southwestern China. The museum is on the grounds of the old Liuzhou Airport. The airport dates from the Second World War when it was an important base for the allied forces, including the American Volunteer Group (AVG), a group of volunteer American fighter pilots popularly known as the Flying Tigers. The Soviet Volunteer Group were also based here. Many of the wartime structures still survive and there are a number of old military aircraft on display. Free. Liuzhou Coffins. Miniature souvenir coffins. From the Chinese saying "Be born in Suzhou, live in Hangzhou, eat in Guangzhou and die in Liuzhou." Liuzhou used to be famous for its coffins which were made from the local high quality wood. Today, only miniature versions are available and are popular as good luck charms as the Chinese for coffin can be used as a play on words for "Gain Promotion and Increase Wealth"
Eat
Luosifen, 螺蛳粉, the local speciality. Rice noodles in a spicy broth made from snails. Instant versions are also available in shops for taking out. Chao luo, 炒螺, snails prepared in wok. Liang ban niu za, 凉拌牛杂, beef offal, cold and dressed with sauce. Yun pian gao, 云片糕, sweet, creamy pastry.
