About Linfen

Linfen is a prefecture-level city in the southwest of Shanxi province, China, bordering Shaanxi province to the west. Linfen City is located in the southern part of Shanxi Province, with the remaining branches of Taiyue to the east and the Luliang Mountains to the west. In the middle is a vast river valley plain, with the Fen River mainstream running across the north and south, and the land on both sides is fertile. It is situated along the banks of the Fen River. It has an area of 20,275 square kilometres (7,828 sq mi) and according to the 2020 Census, a population of 3,976,481 inhabitants of which 959,198 live in the built-up (or metro) area made up of Yaodu urban district. The GDP of Linfen ranked second in Shanxi Province. It was known as Pingyang (平陽) during the Spring and Autumn period. In 2006, the American Blacksmith Institute listed Linfen as one of the ten most polluted cities in the world, but air quality had improved by 2023.

Prior to 1978, Linfen was famous for its spring water, greenery and rich agriculture and therefore nicknamed "The Modern Fruit and Flower Town". Since then it has been developing into a main industrial center for coal mining, which has significantly damaged the city's environment, air quality, farming, health and its previous status as a green village.

Linfen travel guide

Understand

History The area around Linfen, in the valley of the Fen River, is regarded as one of the early centers of Chinese civilization, with archaeological finds suggesting Paleolithic and Neolithic activity and early settlements dating back to the Shang period. In traditional accounts, Linfen is associated with the legendary sage-emperor Yao, who is said to have established his capital in this region. During the Warring States period, the city was known as Pingyang and served as the capital of the small State of Han. Under the Han dynasty, it became a county, and in 583 CE the name "Linfen" was first adopted for the local county, while the wider region continued to be called Pingyang. In the Tang dynasty, the area formed part of Jin Prefecture. During the subsequent Five Dynasties period, Linfen's location made it a site of military importance. In the Ming and early Qing dynasties, Linfen (Pingyang) functioned as the seat of a superior prefecture. The Ming government constructed city walls of roughly 6 km in circumference, and by early Qing times the settlement had begun to expand beyond them. In 1695, the region experienced a major earthquake, known as the 1695 Linfen earthquake, estimated at magnitude 7.8, which caused widespread destruction and significant casualties. In the 20th century, the arrival of railways strengthened Linfen's role as a regional transport and industrial center. The development of coal resources stimulated industrial growth, including power generation, metallurgy, agricultural machinery, and food processing. Today, Linfen reflects a long and evolving history, transitioning from an early cultural and administrative hub into a modern industrial city, while retaining a number of heritage sites linked to its past.

Climate

Linfen City is located in the inland area of the warm temperate zone and has a temperate continental monsoon climate. The city experiences four distinct seasons, with a generally dry atmosphere and strong continental influences. Winter is long, cold and mostly dry, with very little snowfall throughout the season. Spring arrives with mild temperatures and gentle breezes, though the air can be dry and occasionally dusty. Autumn is one of the most pleasant times of the year, bringing cooler weather and light rainfall, making it comfortable for outdoor travel. Summer, by contrast, is hot and prone to periods of intense drought, despite most of the annual rainfall occurring during the summer monsoon. The extreme maximum temperature reaches 41 °C, while the extreme minimum temperature can drop to –23 °C. Linfen's annual
