About Kigoma
Kigoma is a city and lake port in Kigoma-Ujiji District in Tanzania, on the northeastern shores of Lake Tanganyika and close to the border with Burundi and The Democratic Republic of the Congo. It serves as the capital for the surrounding Kigoma Region and has a population of 232,388 (2022 census). The city is situated at an elevation of 775 metres (2,543 ft).
The historic trading town of Ujiji is located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) south-east of Kigoma.
Kigoma is one of the busiest ports on northeastern Lake Tanganyika since historically it was the only one that had a functioning railway connection (the one at Kalemie in The Democratic Republic of the Congo is not operational at the moment), a direct link to the ocean port at Dar es Salaam. Kigoma Port in the Kigoma Bay has a wharf of two hundred metres (660 ft) and several cranes and is equipped to handle shipping containers. However, the bay is suffering from silting up as a result of soil erosion from surrounding hills, and the water depths at wharfside has diminished from 6 metres (20 ft) to 1.8 metres (5 ft 11 in). Getting there
By plane The small Kigoma Airport is in the eastern suburbs and has services from Dar es Salaam and Bujumbura, organization at the airport is very simple.

By train
National operator TRC runs a 3x-weekly overnight sleeper service from Dar es Salaam via Dodoma and Tabora, the journey takes two nights from Dar es Salaam and one night from cities further inland. A ticket for second class sleepers costs TSh 39,700, while first class tickets start at TSh 54,900.

Road bus Kigoma is at the end of road B381, leaving the national road B8 at Kasulu. Roads are passable and steadily being improved. Traversing the country takes 3-4 days. the bus from Kigoma to Mpanda takes 6 hours a long a good road. A daily International bus (Luba express) goes to/from Kigoma to Bujumbura Burundi.
By ferry
There are a few ferries that ply up and down Lake Tanganyika. Most famous is the MV Liemba, first built as a German warship in 1913. This ferry still operates between Kigoma and Mpulungu on the southern shores of the lake in Zambia, stopping at several places along the coast. Nowadays the modern MV Amani Kigoma also runs between Kalemie, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kigoma and Bujumbura in Burundi. Additionally, there are small ships that operate to and from minor towns. While much improved, safety standards are still not up to international standards. Departures generally happen a few times per month, but schedules are erratic. It's usually best to inquire at the port directly.
Getting around
By foot, taxi, or little motorcycle taxis (TSh 1500-3000 in 2023) for an inner city ride.

The MV Liemba sails in direction Mpulungu (Zambia) and has a very erratic schedule. Buses go as far as Bukoba (about 20 hours) Mpanda (six hours) and Sumbawanga (ten hours).
