About Kasukabe

Kasukabe (春日部市, Kasukabe-shi) is a city located in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. It was one of the special cities of Japan until their abolition in 2015. As of 1 February 2021, the city had an estimated population of 233,278 in 108,328 households and a population density of 3,500 inhabitants per square kilometre (9,100/sq mi). The total area of the city is 66.00 square kilometres (25.48 sq mi). Kasukabe is famous for the production of kiri-tansu (桐箪笥), traditional tansu dressers made from paulownia wood. The cultural and economic value of the paulownia is reflected in its designation as the official town tree.

Kasukabe is located in far eastern Saitama Prefecture, divided between the Shimosa Plateau and the Omiya Plateau by the Nakagawa lowlands and the Edogawa River. The eastern portion of the city is still rural, with the largest area of paddy fields in Saitama.

Understand

Kasukabe is a city of over 200,000 people, in eastern Saitama prefecture. It is the setting of the manga cartoon stories Lucky Star (らき☆すた) and Crayon Shin-chan (クレヨンしんちゃん).

Getting there

By train 1 Kasukabe Station (春日部駅) is served by the Tobu Urban Park line (connect to JR at Ōmiya and the Tobu Skytree line (connect to JR at Shin-Koshigaya). From Tokyo, take JR train to Ōmiya for Tobu Urban Park line or Kita-Senju for Tobu Skytree line. 2 Minami-Sakurai Station (南桜井駅), in the heart of town, is served by Tobu Urban Park line.

By car From the Tohoku Expressway's Iwatsuki Interchange, take Highway 16 towards Noda for about 17 km (30 minutes). From the Jouban Expressway's Kashiwa Interchange, take Highway 16 towards Noda for about 20 km (40 minutes).

Getting around

The city's Haru Bus serves three routes, on Monday through Saturday, for a few hundred yen per ride. Given that, you might find a taxi (about ¥1000 across town) to be faster and more convenient, though more expensive.

1 Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel (首都圏外郭放水路), 春日部市上金崎720, ☏ +81 48-746-0748. Tu-F 10:00-16:00. This massive underground flood-control system, also known as G-CANs, was finished in 2009 at the cost of hundreds of billions of yen (a few billion US dollars), with the aim of preventing the perennial floods which have plagued this part of the Kanto plain. The centrepiece is a huge underground tank with dozens of pillars. It has been called the "temple", and serves as a setting for TV commercials. A 90-minute group tour is offered each Tuesday-Friday, at 10:00, 13:00, and 15:00. It is free, but you must reserve (in Japanese) by phone or over the internet 1-28 days in advance. The tour is in Japanese, and someone in each party must be able to translate safety instructions for non-speakers. About 10 minutes of the tour is actually spent in the "temple". Tours are subject to cancellation if, say, the tanks are full of floodwater. Free, reservation required. 2 Crayon Shin-chan Buriburi Cinema Studio (ゲーセン クレヨンしんちゃん 嵐を呼ぶ ブリブリシネマスタジオ), 1 Chome−1−1 (On 3rd floor in LaLaGarden mall), ☏ +81 48-731-6822. 10:00-20:00 daily. Museum dedicated to Crayon Shin-chan. You can find movie posters, DVDs, and life-size Crayon Shin-chan characters to take pictures with. You can buy Crayon Shin-can souvenirs here.
