Geography Jangipur covers the northern salient of South Bengal, along the Ganges River. The river itself divides into two branches in this region: the Padma River (পদ্মা Padmā) that travels to Bangladesh, and the Hooghly River (হুগলি Hugli) that travels within West Bengal. Although the original source of the Hooghly is near Giria, the river is mostly fed by the Farakka Feeder Canal dug in the 1970s as an effort to rejuvenate the river. However, the Ganges water sharing between India and Bangladesh remains a matter of dispute. Many of the towns in this region are developed around the Ganges or one of its branches, with Sagardighi being a major exception.

Towns

1 Jangipur Town (জঙ্গিপুর শহর Jongipur Shohor) — subdivision headquarters, said to have been founded by Mughal emperor Jahangir. It was an important centre of silk trade during the early years of British rule, then known as "Jungypore". The Jungypore silk was very famous during that period. The town was best known as the toll station for registering all the traffic on the Hooghly in the early 20th century. But the trade and traffic has later fallen, and much of the town has been swept away by the river. 2 Dhulian (ধুলিয়ান Dhuliyān) — a quiet town with people having a riverside lifestyle. Local people of this place spend a lot of time on the river and by the riverside. It is a no-fuss river town where you do not have to be pressurised by the regular tourist hassle but can enjoy the riverside activities like boating and fishing, and long river walks. 3 Farakka (ফরাক্কা Phorākkā or ফারাক্কা Phārākkā) — a popular picnic spot with the Farakka Barrage. It is surrounded by water channels and canals. Deer are nurtured in a park on the bank of the Ganges. The project is covered by much greenery and has a full, fresh, airy atmosphere to live a peaceful and healthy life.
