Grove Hill

About Grove Hill

Grove Hill is in the Gulf Coast region of Alabama.

Grove Hill travel guide

Understand

Established in 1832 as the seat of Clarke County, Grove Hill was named for a grove of oak trees on the surrounding plateau. The whole Southern hospitality is something the local population has down pat here, so don't be too surprised if you get a Yankee comment when you show up in your Ivy League t-shirt.

Getting there

So remote, better have a car, as it's in the middle of a meshwork of two lane highways that don't see much in the way of public transport.

See

1 Clarke Co Historical Museum, 116 Cobb St, ☏ +1 251 275-2014. Housed in the Alston-Cobb House, which is noteworthy in itself for being one of the few remaining Greek Revival I-houses, it showcases such things as fossils and Civil War memorabilia, in addition to some interesting structures on the surrounding property, like a corn crib and a type of settler's cabin known as a dogtrot house. (updated Oct 2021) 2 Kathryn Tucker Windham Library and Museum, 30755 US-43, Thomasville (located on Coastal Alabama Community College campus), ☏ +1 334-637-3146. M-Th 7:30AM-5PM, F 7:30AM-1:30PM. A museum about a well-known local storyteller, and associated library. (updated Oct 2021)

Sleep

Accommodations in Grove Hill are really quite rustic; you'd do better to stay in Thomasville or somewhere else.

1 Hometown Inn USA, 571 N Park Dr, Thomasville, ☏ +1 334 636-2000. This place is real homey with Civil War books and wall hangings to look at, complimentary breakfast, and an outdoor pool. (updated Oct 2021)
