About Glenville

Glenville is a town of about 1,100 people (2021) and the county seat of Gilmer County, on the Little Kanawha River. It is home to Glenville State University, Cedar Creek State Park and several industrial companies, as well as a federal prison.

Getting there

Glenville is at the intersection of US-119 and WV-5. 16 miles to the east is I-79, about a 25-minute drive.

1 Cedar Creek State Park, 2947 Cedar Creek Rd (about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Glenville; if hauling a camper, it is best to travel Route 5 through Glenville, not through Cedarville and Copen Road), ☏ +1 304-462-8517. It has camping facilities, hiking trails, swimming pool, a restored schoolhouse and a chain of 3 small ponds. The old one-room schoolhouse complete with restored school desks and potbellied stove is open for tours on Saturdays in the summer. (updated Sep 2023) WV State Folk Festival, Various venues around town. 3 days in mid-June. Singing, story-telling, arts and crafts, 5K race, fiddle and banjo contest, square dancing.
