El Chichón travel guide

Understand

History El Chichón was thought to be a dormant volcano until 1982, when it erupted 3 times within a week, leveling nearby villages and killing 1,900 people.

Landscape

Flora and fauna

Climate The most important thing to keep in mind is that northern Chiapas has a dry and a wet season. The wet season starts around May but is most pronounced between July and October when afternoon showers are common. The driest part of the dry season is February to April and this is the best time for hikes up the mountain because the trails are usually dry whereas they get muddy and slippery when wet. Expect hot temperatures and humid conditions any time of year.

Getting there

The closest airport with scheduled commercial flights is in Villahermosa, about 120 km from El Chichon. Most visitors to El Chichon travel to the town of Pichucalco, which is about 70 km from Villahermosa. They then use Pichucalco as a base camp. From there, it is about another 50 km to the village of Chapultenango, where the trail head up the mountain is located.

Do

Hike to the summit: The main trail is an out-and-back route starting in the nearby town of Chapultenango. The trail is moderately difficult but can be handled by most adults with a normal level of fitness. The most difficult terrain is descending into the caldera (or rather ascending when you're done exploring the lake). The hike is 5.5 km one way and will take 2 to 3 hours from the base to the top. Figure 11 km total and about 5-6 hours. Swim in the lake: The water is warm and lightly sulferous but refreshing. Bring a towel.

Drink & nightlife

Bring plenty of water. You will be on the mountain at least 5 hours and there are no sources of drinking water along the way.
