Digboi travel guide

Understand

The origin of the name "Digboi" (Assamese: DEEG-boy) is unclear. As the legend goes, the Assam Railways and Trading Company (AR&TC) commissioned Italian engineers to build a railway line from Dibrugarh to Margherita (headquarters of AR&TC) in 1867. As they accidentally discovered oil around 10 mi (16 km) from Margherita, Canadian engineer W. L. Lake shouted "Dig boy, dig", which got corrupted to "Digboi" in Assamese.
