About Dačice

Dačice is a town of around 7,200 inhabitants (2025) in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands of the Czech Republic. The historic town centre is well preserved and is protected as an urban monument zone. The town is notable as the home of the sugar cube, which was invented here in 1841 by Jakob Christof Rad.

Dačice is a charming, rather quiet town.

Getting there

Railway connection from Jihlava. The fastest variants are: From Prague by train, with a transfer in Havlíčkův Brod, see the online timetable. From Brno, you can go by train to Třebíč and then transfer to a direct bus, going from the terminal next to the train station. From Prague (Florenc station), there is one direct bus each weekend day.

The monastery complex with the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, and the Church of Saint Lawrence are the most valuable preserved Baroque monuments and the main landmarks of the town:

1 Carmel of the Mother of God (Karmel Matky Boží). Franciscan monastery from 1660–1664, since 1994 belonging to the Discalced Carmelite order, with the church of St. Anthony of Padua from 1672–1677. The monastery is still active and inaccessible for the public. 2 Church of St. Lawrence (Kostel svatého Vavřince). from 1775–1785 Other sights:

3 Dačice castle (Zámek Dačice). A national cultural monument. The New Castle, nowadays called Dačice Castle, was rebuilt in the 19th century from Renaissance to the current Empire form, and it is open to visitors. It includes a 10-ha (25 acres) large English-style landscape park. The invention of the sugar cube is the subject of a permanent exhibition in the Municipal Museum and Gallery, which is located in the southern wing of the Dačice Castle. 4 Old castle (starý zámek). Renaissance palace from 1572–1579, seat of the city council. The Old Castle was built in 1572–1579 and served as the manor house until 1591, when the New Castle was built. The Old Castle now houses part of the municipal office. Renaissance tower from 1586–1592 Chapel of St. Roch and St. Sebastian from the end of the 17th century Marian Column (Mariánský sloup), on Havlíček Square. with Baroque sculpture from 1725 The Renaissance town hall is the most significant house of the square and still serves its original purpose. In the town centre there is also a granite monument commemorating the invention of the sugar cube.
