With a population of around 25,000, Bururi sits at an elevation of about 1,800 m (5,900 ft), providing a cooler climate and lush greenery. It is surrounded by hills and mountains, making it a serene destination for nature lovers and an ideal place for bird watching, particularly in the nearby Bururi Forest Nature Reserve. Bururi Province is located in the southern part of Burundi. It borders Lake Tanganyika to the west and is surrounded by several other provinces, including: Rumonge Province to the northwest Makamba Province to the south Rutana Province to the east Bururi is known for its lush, mountainous terrain and has a cooler climate due to its higher altitude. The province also includes Bururi Forest Nature Reserve, which is rich in biodiversity, particularly bird species. The provincial capital is the town of Bururi.

You can reach Bururi by road from major cities such as Bujumbura, which is about 100 km (62 mi) to the northwest. Travel options include buses, shared taxis, or private vehicles. While Bururi does not have a public airport, nearby Bujumbura offers domestic and international flights.
