About Bheemunipatnam

Bheemunipatnam, or Bheemili for short, is a suburb 25 km (16 mi) east of Visakhapatnam in northern Andhra Pradesh. Apart from the famous beach, the town has the remains of a Portuguese church, a Dutch cemetery and two Buddhist sites.

Getting there

By plane 1 Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport (Bhogapuram Airport). The second airport of Greater Vizag, yet to be opened in 2026. (updated May 2026)

By car Bheemili can be easily reached from Visakhapatnam by Vizag-Bheemili Beach Road.

1 Andhra Baptist Church. A heritage church established in 1873. (updated May 2026) 2 Dutch Cemetery. One of the few remnants of the Dutch rule in India, the cemetery was also used for British officials. (updated May 2026) 3 Erra Matti Dibbalu (Red Sand Hills). As the name suggests, it's a group of hillocks made of red sand. (updated May 2026) 4 Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple. A Hindu temple at the foothills of Pavurallakonda. (updated May 2026)

Buddhist sites 5 Pavurallakonda (Narasimhaswamy Konda). A hill with the ruins of a Buddhist monastery at the top. (updated Jun 2025) 6 Gudiwada Dibba. A small hillock nearby with another Buddhist site, possibly of the 2nd century BCE. (updated May 2026)
