The Alejandro de Humboldt National Park is in Eastern Cuba, in the provinces of Holguín and Guantánamo. It's listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Understand

Named after the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt who explored the area at the turn of the 19th century, the park boasts a particularly rich flora.

History The park was initially protected by the Cuban government in the 1960s as three separate wildlife refuges. These areas were combined to form the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park in 1996. The park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

Landscape

Flora and fauna Animals in the park include the endemic Cuban solenodon, as well as different parrots, lizards, hummingbirds and hutia.

Climate

Getting there

The park is located in the easternmost of Cuba, some 30 km northeast of Guantanamo city. Numerous agencies in Baracoa provide organized hikes into the park.
