About Al Diwaniyah
Al Diwaniyah (Arabic: ٱلدِّيوَانِيَّة ad-Dīwānīyah), also spelt Diwaniya, is the capital city of Iraq's Al-Qādisiyyah Governorate. In 2014 the population was estimated at 700,000. The city was founded by the rulers of the Khaza'il Dynasty (Banu Khuza'ah) and formally known as Khuza'ahs Diwaniyah - Khuza'ahs Guest House.
The area around Al Diwaniyah, which is well irrigated from the nearby Euphrates river, is often considered to be one on the most fertile parts of Iraq, and is heavily cultivated. The town is located on the main rail transport corridor between Baghdad and Basra in south-central Iraq.
For birdwatchers, Al-Diwaniyah is a city with a rich bird list, as the city has a wide range of biodiversity. Al-Qadisiyah consists of vast agricultural areas, wetlands, arid zones, and semi-desert areas.
The city is the site of a tire manufacturing plant that once provided tires for much of Iraq. The plant is still active as of 2008.
Al-Diwaniyah is the headquarters of the Iraqi Army's 8th Division.
Fortress Zarb (Dhirb) Castle is named after Dhirb Al-Khuza'i, an Emir of the Khaza'il.

Getting there
Al Diwaniyah is located on the rail corridor between Baghdad and Basra. Iraqi Republic Railways runs two overnight trains which both calls here. 1 Al Diwaniyah railway station is located east of city centre.

Sleep
1 Princes Tower Hotel and Restaurant, ☏ +964 782 150 2516. In a city of few hotels, an aged specimen with wallpaper that has probably absorbed many years of cigarette smoke awaits, but at least you can get some decent Iraqi fare in the restaurant.
