About
Praia de Atalanta, also known as Cabo de Santa Maria and Costa da Boa Esperança, is an approximately 10-kilometre-long (6.2 mi) coastal sector and beach on the northern shore of Boa Vista, Cape Verde. It lies about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) northeast of the island capital, Sal Rei, and 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Vigía. Access is by sand tracks. One of the beach's current names derives from the Spanish cargo ship Cabo Santa Maria, which ran aground there on 1 September 1968 under the command of Captain Fernando Sabín. The abandoned hull became part of the coastal landscape and one of the best-known visual symbols of Boa Vista.
