You must be aware that there is a BRICS conference going on in South Africa as we speak and it was one of the major issues related to Russian President Putin as he has an arrest warranty issued against him and all the participating nations will have to arrest him in order to abide by the rules. South Africa said that they would not like to arrest the Russian President but they don’t have the choice. Due to that reason, Putin has not attended the BRICS summit in-person this time. It is worth noting that BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and it has been named on the initials of these nations.
However, it looks like there will be a need for the name of this alliance to be changed soon as the alliance has grown from 5 countries to 11 countries now as 6 new members have joined the alliance which are Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates. While this might not be an alliance as big as the EU or others but it is surely a way to disrupt the world order which has been led by the UK and USA for all these years.
China’s President Xi Jinping says that “This membership expansion is historic,” and adds that “It shows the determination of BRICS countries for unity and cooperation with the broader developing countries.” South African President Ramaphosa, who said that these new members will officially join from Jan 1, 2024, said that “BRICS has embarked on a new chapter in its effort to build a world that is fair, a world that is just, a world that is also inclusive and prosperous,” and added that “We have consensus on the first phase of this expansion process and other phases will follow.” which is a hint that more nations will be added to the alliance in the near future. Russian President Putin also said that “BRICS is not competing with anyone,” but also noted that “it’s also obvious that this process of the emerging of a new world order still has fierce opponents” hinting towards the US not liking this move.
