Wolaita Sodo is a political and administrative center of the Wolaita Zone and South Ethiopia Regional State. It is home to Wolaita Sodo university, and people of different nationalities living together. Wolayttattuwa is widely spoken in the city.

By bus Wolaita Sodo is 6 hours by road from Addis Ababa. There are many daily village buses from nearby towns, including Awasa and Arba Minch.

Wolaita Sodo is divided into seven sub cities, these are; Arada, Dil Begerera, Fana Womba. Larena Amba, Mehal Amba, Merkato Yushuwa and Wadu Amba. These sub cities are separated by a couple of miles. city buses, minibuses interconnect these sub cities.
