Its population in 2020 was 34,245. The language spoken is Sama, also known as Sinama. The first Muslims in the Philippines are said to have arrived at Simunur.

2 Masjid Shiekh Karimul Makhdum, Barangay Tubig Indangan. The Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Mosque building dates from the 1960s. Four old mosque pillars found within the mosque are from the 17th century. According to local lore, the original mosque, built in the indigenous sacred Moro pagoda architectural style, was established in 1380, making it the oldest mosque in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia. During the American period, a group of soldiers arrived here only to be bewildered by its natural beauty. Inspired by the tropical landscape, they composed a song titled “Tawi-Tawi Beach”.
