Shiping is a city in Yunnan. Shiping County is located in the northwest of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, a historic town renowned for its natural beauty and cultural richness. Since ancient times, it has been an important hub on the Southern Silk Road, earning the title of “Land of Literary Eminence” due to its flourishing academic tradition. Districts Shiping County is an administrative region under the jurisdiction of the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Unlike prefecture-level cities, Shiping County consists of several subdistricts and townships. Below are the main administrative divisions of Shiping County:

Urban areas Baxin Subdistrict: The primary urban area of Shiping, home to the county government and the political, economic, and cultural center. Yilong Subdistrict: Located around Yilong Lake, it has developed rapidly, and is vital for tourism and ecological preservation.

Township areas Baxin Town: Adjacent to Baxin Subdistrict, it combines agriculture with urbanization and is renowned for rice cultivation. By plane Shiping does not have its own airport, so the nearest major airport is Kunming Changshui International Airport (about 230 km from Shiping). You can fly to Kunming first, then take a bus or rent a car to Shiping.

By bus Kunming's West Bus Stations (西部客运站) and South Bus Stations (南部客运站) are long-distance buses that offer buses to Shiping. The bus ride usually takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

By train 1 Mengzi Railway Station (蒙自汽车站). Shiping does not have a direct train station. The nearest train station is in Mengzi City, at Mengzi Railway Station. From Kunming, you can take a train to Mengzi, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. Once in Mengzi, you can take a bus or taxi to Shiping, which takes about 1 hour. (updated Dec 2024)

Walking The county town of Shiping is known for its traditional architecture and rich cultural atmosphere. Walking allows you to immerse yourself in local life and stop anytime to appreciate ancient streets and alleys. For example, the Shiping Confucian Temple is a landmark located in the town center, easily accessible on foot. Additionally, the town’s markets and street food stalls are perfect for exploring while walking, offering a taste of authentic Shiping flavors. Walking is ideal for relaxed travelers who prefer a leisurely pace.

Cycling For covering a larger area, cycling is an excellent choice. The town has relatively flat roads, making it suitable for bike rides. Renting a bicycle allows you to explore along Yilong Lake, which has an extensive shoreline and beautiful views. The nearby villages are full of pastoral charm, and you can stop anytime for photos or to experience local life. Some rental shops even provide cycling maps to help visitors plan their routes better.

Public transportation Shiping County has short-distance bus routes that can take you to nearby attractions. For example, a bus ride from the town center to Yilong Lake Scenic Area usually takes only 10–20 minutes, which is very convenient. Public buses are budget-friendly and an economical way to travel. These buses also reach some nearby towns and villages, making them a good option for travelers who want to explore more on a limited budget.

Yilong Lake, a large fresh water lake with a surface area of 32 square km, is particularly notable for its scenery, including the colorful lotus flowers that bloom on its surface. It is located about 2 km east of the county seat. The Xiushan Temple is located southwest of the county seat. It was constructed during the Tang Dynasty and renamed Xiushan Temple during the Ming Dynasty.
