Lira is the main municipal, administrative and commercial centre of Lira District in Northern Uganda. It is the largest urban centre in the Lango sub-region and serves as a key hub for trade, education and governance in the area.

Historically, Lira was part of the former Lango District and remains the cultural and economic heart of the Langi people. The city has grown rapidly and was officially granted city status in 2020. Lira District is part of Lango sub-region, which consists of the following districts: Alebtong District, Amolatar District, Apac District, Dokolo District, Lira District, Kole District, Otuke District and Oyam District. The city of Lira remains the principle commercial centre of the sub-region. The climate is tropical with hot and dry conditions from December to March and two rainy seasons (April- May and August -November).
