Hongseong is in the central part of the west coast of Chungcheongnam-do. The east-west length is 29 km and the north-south length is 23.5 km, and the total length of the coastline combining the land branch and the island department is 23 km. The area is 444 km², accounting for 5.4% of the total area of Chungcheongnam-do. As of 2018, the population was about 100,000 people, accounting for 5% of the total population of Chungcheongnam-do.
History Hongseong has developed into an important military hub since ancient times, and an administrative center during the Joseon Dynasty. It was affected by resource exploitation and forced labor during the Japanese colonial period, and after Korea's liberation, it became a transportation and logistics hub as agriculture and industry grew. Also, it has drawn attention as a tourist destination thanks to its proximity to the west coast, making it an area rich in natural scenery and historical sites.
Climate
The average temperature of Hong Seongng-si (Chungcheongnam-do) reflects climate characteristics in the central inland region. Hongseong generally has a warm climate. In summer it is humid and hot: 25–30 °C (77–86 °F). There is a rainy season with a lot of precipitation. In spring and autumn the weather is pleasant. In winter, dry weather continues, and temperatures fall to about freezing. The average temperature is a time for travel and outdoor activities. Hongseong is generally affected by continental climate and marine climate, and marine climate differences.

By train Hongseong is served by the Hongseong Station on the Honam Line, which connects to major cities such as Seoul, Gwangju, and Daejeon. Passengers can take trains from major stations like Seoul Station or Yongsan Station for direct access to Hongseong.
