The city is dominated by POSCO: its Gwangyang Steel Works is the largest steel mill of its kind in the world. Although known historically as a “city of steel,” Gwangyang is undergoing transformation into a more diversified city — blending industry with culture, art, and tourism. In the early 2020s, the opening of Park1538 Gwangyang — a complex cultural space featuring a promotional hall, an art museum (POSCO Art Museum Gwangyang), and an education center — underscores the city’s evolving identity.

如何抵達

By express / intercity bus Gwangyang is well-linked by express and intercity buses from major cities. Regular buses run from Seoul’s Central City Bus Terminal (3-hr-40-min to 4-hr journey; fares from ₩34,700 to ₩45,100) and from Busan. Seat classes vary from standard to deluxe/premium, offering luggage-friendly and comfortable travel.

By train and transfer For those preferring rail, you can take a train toward southern hubs (e.g. Suncheon) and transfer to a bus or local transport to reach Gwangyang. This option offers flexibility for travelers connecting to other destinations in Jeolla or the south coast.

By car Driving gives maximum flexibility: from Seoul, follow the expressway through Suncheon–Wanju, then Namhae Expressway, exiting at Gwangyang IC. A car is recommended if you plan to explore surrounding nature, go island-hopping, or travel with luggage.

From nearby airports If you arrive via Yeosu Airport (when flights available), take a taxi or local transport from the airport to Gwangyang for a quick entry. This option suits travelers arriving by air and heading straight to Gwangyang or the southern coast.

Local transport within Gwangyang After arrival, local buses or taxis (including ride-hailing) can take you to accommodation, restaurants, or tourist spots. For exploring outer areas like mountains, coastlines, or remote villages, renting a car or using your own vehicle is more convenient.
