Gimcheon

關於Gimcheon

Gimcheon, or Kimcheon (김천시), is a city in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. The official brand slogan of Gimcheon is “The Center of Korea, Gimcheon—Connected in All Directions.” The phrase Satongpaldal (四通八達), literally meaning “open and connected in all directions,” is used to highlight the city’s role as a major transportation hub. Located on the boundary between Gyeongsang and Chungcheong provinces, Gimcheon is where the Gyeongbu and Gyeongbuk railway lines, as well as the Gyeongbu and Jungbu Inland Expressways, intersect. Its well-developed transport network has long defined the city as a key crossroads in Korea.

城市概覽

History Though often overshadowed by larger neighboring cities such as Daegu and Gumi, Gimcheon has a long and storied history stretching deep into Korea’s dynastic past. The surrounding region shows evidence of settlement since the Three Kingdoms period, when it lay on the frontier between Silla and Baekje territories. Gimcheon’s location in a fertile basin along key mountain passes made it an important stop for travelers and traders moving between Gyeongju and the western provinces. During the Goryeo and early Joseon dynasties, Gimcheon grew as a market town and transport hub linking inland Korea with the Nakdong River valley. It became especially renowned for Jikjisa Temple, one of Korea’s oldest and most venerated Buddhist temples, founded in the 5th century. The temple complex, nestled on Mt. Hwangaksan, played a central role in spreading Buddhist culture throughout the region and remains a major pilgrimage site today. Under Japanese rule (1910–1945), Gimcheon developed as a minor administrative and agricultural center connected to the national railway network. Following Korea’s liberation and the devastation of the Korean War, the city was gradually rebuilt and transformed into a regional transport and logistics hub. Its strategic position midway between Seoul and Busan earned it the nickname “the heart of Korea.” In the 21st century, Gimcheon was designated as part of the national Innovation City project, bringing in new administrative agencies and residents. Today, the city blends the quiet charm of its historical heritage—embodied by Jikjisa Temple and old market streets—with the modern dynamism of a growing provincial center.

Climate

Gimcheon has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dwa) with four distinct seasons. Summers (June–August) are hot and humid, with average highs around 30 °C and frequent monsoon rains in July. Autumn (September–November) is generally mild and dry, offering clear skies and comfortable temperatures — the best time to visit.

Facilities include restrooms, ticket machines, convenience stores, and small cafés nearby. For long-distance trips, KTX services at Gimcheon–Gumi Station provide faster options, but Gimcheon Station remains ideal for visitors exploring the downtown area. The two stations are roughly 20 minutes apart by car or taxi. (updated Oct 2025)

Gimcheon is small enough to get around by bus or taxi. City buses connect major areas but run infrequently, while taxis are easy to find at the train station and bus terminal and are reasonably priced.
