It is home to about 4,000 people (census, 1 April 2020) Montour and several other enormous iron mills dominated the town for most of the 19th century and the iron industry was the chief employer in the region. The iron mills fell into decline, however, as steel replaced iron in the 20th century.

1 Danville Historic District. The buildings mostly date from the 1840s to the early 20th century. Notable buildings include the Montour County Courthouse (1871), Mahoning Presbyterian Church (1853), Pine Street Lutheran Church (c. 1860), Eli Trego Building, Heim Suspender Factory (1835), First Ward School (c. 1870), Bnai Zion Temple (c. 1865), and Jemima Donaldson's Cross Keys Tavern (c. 1812). 2 General William Montgomery House, 11 Bloom St. (updated May 2020) 3 Danville West Market Street Historic District. 42 contributing buildings in a residential area of Danville. The buildings date from about 1800 to 1925. The houses are mostly of brick and frame construction, with some log and stone dwellings, and in a variety of architectural styles including Italianate, Federal, Queen Anne and Second Empire.
