It is in the City of Knox. In 2021, its population was 23,600.

History The area was first occupied by the Wurundjeri, Indigenous Australians of the Kulin nation, who spoke variations of the Woiwurrung language group. In its early days of European settlement, Boronia was predominantly an orchard, flower growing and farming area. The railway line was built in 1889 passing through Boronia without providing a station. The nearest station was Bayswater until 1920, when a train station was opened in Boronia attracting new residents and tourists, along with the post office also opened in 1920.

By train Travel from Melbourne takes approximately 1 hour. To use public transport you'll need a Myki card, which costs $6 (or $3 for children/concession) from post offices, milk-bars, petrol stations and train stations. Once you have the Myki card it needs to be topped up with money. An adult fee (for one trip) is approximately $3 (it changes frequently) and a child/concession fee is $1.50. The number of stops doesn't change the cost.

Boronia's most impressive historical building is Miller Homestead, which was built in 1888 for John Miller, who was the first president of the Shire of Fern Tree Gully. The property included stables and horse training facilities and was over 77 acres (310,000 m²) in size. The property was sub-divided in 1971. Miller homestead is classified by the National Trust of Australia (Vic).
