The name likely refers to the town's location on fertile land near the Brahmaputra River, a significant area with paddy fields. According to data mentioned in the dynasty of the Mayang kingdom, a prince named Ramjaya Singh came to Pabhakati near present-day bhuragaon and established another Kachari kingdom during the reign of the 23rd king of this kingdom (1779-88 AD).
