Hueyapan is a small town in the mountainous region of eastern Morelos in Central Mexico. The town is a Nahuatl indigenous community and about half the population speak Nahuatl as their primary language. The town is most famous for its large 16th century monastery, Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town was initially settled by people from Xochimilco in 902 AD and paid tribute to the Aztecs in the 15th century. It was conquered by the Spanish Empire in 1521 and evangelized by Dominican and Franciscan missionaries.

The closest major airport is Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX IATA) in Mexico City. From anywhere in Mexico City, take Metro (Line 1 or Line B) to the San Lazaro station, which is connected to the TAPO bus station. Find the Volcanes bus line and buy a ticket to Popopark (Hueyapan does not have its own bus station). The trip to Hueyapan takes about 2 hours and a ticket will cost about M$200. Once you arrive in Popopark, you can take a taxi the last 20 km to Hueyapan.

1 Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Centenario, San Miguel. Established by the Dominican order in 1539, the monastery was built by both Dominican and Franciscan friars between 1563 and 1573. It is an austere baroque design with little ornamentation on the exterior adobe walls but the interior preserves several historic frescoes. The church suffered some damage in an earthquake in 2017, but repairs were completed by 2021. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (updated Feb 2026)

Hueyapan is known for its traditional handcrafted textiles, particularly embroidered clothing and hand-woven cloths produced on a backstrap loom. Most producers are individuals working out of their own homes who sell via informal channels such as local tianguis.
