State Parks and Historic Sites This part of the state has a plethora of sites where the region's rich history can be taken in. This was the region where the Arkansas component of the American Civil War's Red River Campaign took place. The sites listed below are not near any specific destination town and are in extremely rural locations. Most sites are open daily.
1 Conway Cemetery Historic State Park, Country Road 9, Bradley (Take AR-160 for 3 miles (5 km) west of Bradley, then turn left on Lafayette County Road 9. Go for 0.5 miles (800 m) and park entrance is on the left.). 8AM to 8PM. Burial site of the first governor of Arkansas. Interpretive display, historic cemetery, and scenic views of surrounding pastures and forest. Free. (updated Aug 2018) 2 Poison Springs Battleground State Park, 665 Highway 76, Chidester (From Interstate 30 in Prescott, drive 30 miles (48 km) on AR-24 to the small town of Chidester. Turn right onto AR-57 and go south for 4 miles (6 km). Turn left onto AR-76 and go east for 4 miles (6 km). Park entrance will be on the left.). Daily 8AM-8PM. Memorial and site of the Battle of Poison Springs, April 18, 1864. Confederates attacked a Union supply train, forcing retreat to Camden. Most notable for the Confederacy's brutal and savage mass murders of captured African American soldiers from the Union. Interpretive displays, picnic tables, and hiking trail. Free. (updated Aug 2018) 3 Jenkins' Ferry Battleground State Park (Jenkins' Ferry Battlefield), Arkansas Highway 46, roughly halfway between Leola and Sheridan.. 24 Hours. The land where this American Civil War battle took place was settled by Thomas Jenkins, who started the ferry in 1815. It was run by his sons, William and John DeKalb, until 1861. The Battle of Jenkins' Ferry, the final battle in the Arkansas component of the Red River Campaign, began on April 30, 1864. Despite their disadvantaged position, Confederates launched one unorganized attack after another. This ultimately failed
