Trump called on US lawmakers. He asked them to prioritize funding for school security over sending military aid to Ukraine. He spoke at a pro-gun conference. Trump questioned how the US sent $40 billion to Ukraine but cannot ensure security in schools.
He stated that we should build safe schools for our children before we nation builds the rest of the world. The US Congress overwhelmingly voted to send nearly $40bn (£31bn) in military aid to Ukraine. In total, US lawmakers sent about $54bn to Ukraine since Russia invaded in February. Trump went on and said that Congress should vote to take back every penny of unused Covid relief money.
Mr. Trump rejected calls for tightened gun controls. Instead, he went on to say that decent Americans should get firearms to defend themselves against evil.
He instead proposed a top-to-bottom overhaul of school safety. He accused Democrats of stonewalling such security measures.
The annual conference of the NRA is taking place 280 miles (450 km) from Uvalde. NRA has five million members.
Several conservative speakers and musical performers announced that they were backing out. This includes Senator John Cornyn and the manufacturer of the rifle used in the Uvalde attack.
Trump hit out at those who withdrew by telling them that, unlike others, he did not disappoint them by not showing up.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated, “There are thousands of laws on the books across the country that limit the owning or using of firearms – laws that have not stopped madmen from carrying out evil acts on innocent people and peaceful communities. In Uvalde, the gunman committed a felony under Texas law before he even pulled the trigger. It is a felony to possess a firearm on school premises. But that did not stop him.”
Trump called in his speech for the US to drastically change our approach to mental health. Texas Senator Ted Cruz blamed mass shootings mainly on absent fathers. He declined church attendance, social media, and video games. Mr. Cruz also reiterated his pro-gun stance and urged delegates “not react to evil.
