Somaliland Political Party Backs Somalia Maritime Case

Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — The Secretary of Waddani, the main opposition party of Somaliland, Mr. Khadar Hussein Abdi said at the weekend that his party, Waddani, supports “Somalia’s maritime dispute case.”

In a session with Somaliland youth groups on Clubhouse, the invitation-only audio-chat app popular around the world, Khadar urged Somalis to support Somalia’s legal maritime claim. “We oppose any attempts to claim Somalia’s maritime territory. This is a common ground for all Somalis” Khadar added.

Khadar Hussein Abdi: “Waddani supports Somalia’s legal maritime case”.

Waddani is the first political party in Somaliland to express its position on the maritime dispute between Somalia and Kenya.

In April 2009, the former Somali Transitional Federal Government of Somalia signed a Memorandum of Understanding that granted Kenya the right to claim the Somali maritime territory.

In 2014, the permanent Federal Government of Somalia led by then President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud submitted the maritime dispute case to the International Court of Justice for adjudication.

Kenya has reportedly notified the International Court of Justice that it will not be participating in the hearing slated to take place today – March 15th 2021.
