More than 80 New York Assembly lawmakers have said that they will support the impeachment of Governor Cuomo. If he decides not to resign one day after the inquiry finds that he has sexually harassed 11 women, then they will take action.
With the 150 members of the legislative body, at least 86 lawmakers have stated that they would support the impeachment. They will go along with the beginning of the process to impeach Governor Andrew Cuomo if he is not stepping down.
An impeachment trial can take place if a majority of lawmakers are supporting the motion. It calls for 76 votes for the New York Assembly to send the articles of impeachment to the state Senate.
State Attorney General Letitia James has announced the results of the investigation. It has been found that Cuomo has harassed 11 women sexually. However, it is following an investigation that she launched after several women came to allege sexual misconduct. It includes groping and inappropriate comments.
James said, “These interviews and pieces of evidence reveal a deeply disturbing, yet clear picture: Gov. Cuomo sexually harassed current and former state employees in violation of both federal and state laws. The independent investigation found that Gov. Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women, many of whom were young women, by engaging in unwanted groping, kisses, hugging and by making inappropriate comments.”
James also said that the Governor and some of his team have also retaliated against one person who came up with the accusations. The district attorney’s office has asked for the investigation materials. The New York attorney general has received it to see if any of the accounts of the material took place in their areas or not.
Cuomo has denied the accusations. He said, “First, I want you to know directly from me that I never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances. I am 63 years old. I have lived my entire adult life in public view. That is just not who I am, and that’s not who I have ever been.”
The number of the New York lawmakers supporting this proceeding has awakened a host of Democrats, including Joe Biden. They are also calling for the resigning of the Governor.
