More Torrential Rains Hamper Access To Remote NE Africa

Bosaso (PP News Desk) — Lorries and passenger vehicles travelling to Bari districts have becoming stranded at the Ceel Daahir watercourse due to torrential rains.

Just last week torrential rains in neighboring Somaliland brought the city of Hargeisa to a standstill.

The local Bari Police Division has issued travel warnings.

Rain water is now flowing from Sanaag stream into the main road at Ceeldaahir, where the concrete watercourse gets inundated.

A lorry braving the sludge at Ceel Daahir.

“An ordinary bridge should have been built there in place of a concrete watercourse that cannot cope with torrential rains” said Abdul Mohamud, a structural engineer in Bosaso.

Passengers stranded at Ceel Daahir watercourse.

Floods eroded foundations of the concrete watercourse, leaving lorries and cars vulnerable to getting bogged down in the sludge.

Ceel Daahir is 90 KM from Bosaso, the main commercial city of Puntland. Seasonal rains often affect travel along the under-maintained Bosaso-Garowe road.
