Bourbon Street terror attack

New Orleans was plunged into chaos early Wednesday morning when a truck plowed through a crowd on Bourbon Street, leaving 10 people dead and 35 injured in what authorities are calling a terrorist attack.

The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar of Texas, was fatally shot by police after the assault. Jabbar, a U.S. citizen, was reportedly dressed in military gear and carrying an ISIS flag in the rented Ford pickup truck used in the attack, according to the FBI. Authorities also discovered weapons and a potential improvised explosive device (IED) inside the vehicle.

The attack occurred around 3:15 a.m. as Bourbon Street was packed with revelers celebrating the New Year. Witnesses described scenes of horror as the truck careened into the crowd. Police officials said Jabbar fired at first responders before being neutralized.

In a related incident, a fire broke out at an Airbnb in the St. Roch neighborhood, prompting evacuations. Law enforcement has linked the blaze to the attack and is investigating its connection.

Authorities are examining the possibility of additional suspects, including whether another individual rented the truck. The FBI confirmed that the vehicle appeared to have been rented, raising questions about potential accomplices.

“This was a deliberate act of terror, and we are treating it as such,” the FBI stated in a midday press briefing. “Our investigation will explore all leads, including the involvement of other individuals.”

The tragedy has left New Orleans in mourning and shock. Local officials have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and vowed to ensure public safety.

“Our city was attacked, but we will remain resilient,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones during this unimaginable time.”

Bourbon Street, known for its vibrant nightlife and historic charm, was eerily quiet Wednesday afternoon as law enforcement cordoned off the area for investigation. The attack marks one of the deadliest incidents in New Orleans in recent years.

As the nation grapples with the devastating news, investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy, seeking justice for the victims and answers to the lingering questions.
