Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalized following an injury sustained during an official engagement in Luxembourg. Pelosi, 84, was in Europe as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
According to Pelosi’s spokesman, Ian Krager, she is receiving “excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals” but will be unable to attend the remainder of the delegation’s events. Krager did not specify the nature of the injury, though sources familiar with the incident indicated that Pelosi tripped and fell while attending an event. One individual, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Pelosi injured her hip during the fall.
Pelosi, who represented California’s 12th district in Congress for over three decades, has remained active in public life since stepping down from her role as House Speaker two years ago. She continues to serve her district as a member of Congress. The former leader had been traveling with other members of Congress to honor veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, one of the most pivotal engagements of World War II.
The fall comes two years after Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, was attacked in their San Francisco home. In October, the assailant who broke into the Pelosis’ home and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. That violent incident, which targeted the former Speaker personally, captured national attention and raised concerns about the safety of lawmakers and their families.
Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who was on the trip with Pelosi, expressed his well-wishes for her recovery. “I’m disappointed Speaker Emerita Pelosi won’t be able to join the rest of our delegation’s events this weekend as I know how much she looked forward to honoring our veterans,” McCaul posted on social media. “But she is strong, and I am confident she will be back on her feet in no time.”
Krager stated that Pelosi looks forward to returning home to the United States soon. The former Speaker’s fall has drawn attention and concern from colleagues across the political spectrum, who have expressed their support for her swift recovery.
Pelosi, who served as Speaker of the House twice, is widely regarded for her leadership and her role in shaping key legislation, particularly during the Obama administration and the Trump era. While she stepped down from her leadership post, Pelosi has remained a prominent figure in American politics.
